I was at Radio Shack the other day looking for a good set of Walkie Talkies. Alot of people use these at the race track to stay in contact with each other. I bought the 18 mile range one and got them home and couldn't even talk a mile on them. I'm taking them back in the morning. What I found out is that they say a 1/2 watt will go 5 miles, 1 watt will go 8-10 miles and 2 watts will go 15 to 18 miles. I think it should be more like 1/2 watt = 200 feet, 1 watt equals 600 yard and 2 watts equals 3/4 of a mile and maybe 1 mile. Anyways with the 2 watts that's about all we could get out of them.
I did some checking and found out that the max watts in the USA is about 5 watts. All I'm looking for really is about 2 miles of range. That's about all we will need at a race track and I think 5 watts should do it based on the 2 watt one I am taking back.
I couldn't find a cheap 5 watt set at Radio Shack. You can order some 150.00 dollar each ones off the online store. I really didn't want to spend that kind of money.
I found these 5 watts ones on sale at Amazon.com for $59.99. Only 10.00 dollars more than I payed for the Radio Shack 2 watt ones. I'm using the slow shipping to get the shipping for free.
One of the people that reviewed it said they worked 5-8 mile in moving cars. I'm only looking for 2 good miles meaning over hills or stands at the track. I'm having them sent to my next stop which I'm leaving for on Sunday. While I'm gone I'll try to get back to you to let you know how they work.
